Hamwih was founded circa 690 by Ina, King of the West Saxons, whose capital was Winchester. The Vikings raided Hamwih in 840 and 842.
In 962 Hamwih was first referred to as Suthamtune perhaps to distinguish it from the Mercian Hamtune now called Northampton.
