Vaults and Vino

Due the enormous success SeeSouthampton continues its unique Vaults & Vino walk in 2017

During a 90 minute guided tour, with a qualified guide and wine connoisseur, you will visit part of the medieval town and experience wine-tasting in an iconic 14th century building.

In the 13th century, Southampton had become a leading port and was particularly involved in trade: French wine was imported and wool was exported.

Stone vaults were built as wine cellars to store wine from France. In most cases, wine cellars were located underground, and the merchant himself lived upstairs. As time went by, some of the vaults went on to be used as shops, showrooms, storage, coal cellars and WWII air-raid shelters.

Now, See Southampton would like to invite you to visit part of the medieval town with a qualified guide, and go inside some underground vaults.
Then, you will experience wine-tasting, with a wine connoisseur, in the famous Wool House, now a micro-brewery called The Dancing Man.

This tour will include a 45mn walk, in which you will have the opportunity to learn about the stories related to the wine trade in Southampton, and visit a few medieval vaults which were once used to store French wine.
Then another 45mns will be spent at the famous Dancing Man brewery, a 14th century historic building used to store wool in medieval times, where you will sample a variety of wines (and nibbles!).
By the end, you will have an idea about the wine in Southampton, where the barrels were stored, and what people would have drunk back in the 1200s and 1300s!

If you wish to stay on for dinner, please do contact The Dancing Man directly to book a table
