WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE SPITFIRE FACTORY WORKERS OF WOOLSTON!
The new play The Shadow Factory and associated exhibition at Nuffield Southampton Theatres new theatre, NST City in Guildhall Square, reminds us of the contribution of the local people of Woolston and surrounding areas in the development and production of the iconic SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE fighter.
Destruction of the Supermarine Woolston and Itchen Works between 24th and 26th September 1940 led to the establishment of the “Shadow Factories” in small premises, many locally, to produce the parts and sub components for later assembly and testing at Southampton (Eastleigh) Airfield and other locations in Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire.
Many skilled craftsmen were employed in the various plants supported by a huge force of female war workers most with initially little engineering experience. Although a huge new factory was built at Castle Bromwich in the Midlands still over 8000 SPITFIRES (out of C22,000 total) mostly specialist marks were produced this way. All this activity supported by local communities “THEY ALSO SERVED”!
The Walk runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays,17th, 21st, 24th, 28th February and 3rd March 2018
