See Southampton offers our new Barrels and Beer. An evening guided walk of historical pubs, followed by a beer-tasting session at the award winning Dancing Man Brewery. You will visit part of the medieval town and experience beer-tasting in an iconic 14th century building.
In 1878, the St. Mary’s Church Temperance Society produced a pamphlet on the evils of drink, and a “Drink Map” of Southampton, which they described as one of the most intemperate cities in the country – one pub for every 153 people! At that time, and for many years before and after, they were talking about the evils of beer – the drink of the working classes, beer.
Thanks to existing maps and records, we can trace some pubs back at least to the 1400s, and a few of these still survive. Other significant pubs have now been adapted to other uses, and new pubs have sprung up in historic buildings.
This tour will include a one hour walk, led by a qualified Southampton Green Badge guide, during which you will have the opportunity to learn about the stories related to pubs and beer in Southampton. All buildings, except for The Dancing Man, will be viewed only from the outside.
By the end of our Barrels and Beer evening, you will have an idea about historical pubs in Southampton, where the barrels were stored, and what people would have drunk over the centuries. Get a flavour of Southampton famed pubs, facts and tales!
Your appetite whetted, a further hour will be spent sampling a variety of beers/mead/cider (served with nibbles) selected and presented by the host/brewer of the famous Wool House, now a Brewery called The Dancing Man.
If you wish to stay on for dinner, please do contact The Dancing Man directly to book a table
