A Walk in the Park

A Walk in the Park is a beautiful 90 minute guided walk around Southampton’s Central Parks starts at the Bargate and enters the parks off Hanover Buildings. Each of the five parks is visited and the monuments and structures are described together with their history.

The story behind the creation of the parks is explained and then each is visited in turn. During the walk the lives of the Victorian philanthropists who donated water fountains and gas lamps to the town as well famous local manufacturers and politicians represented by statues in the parks are explored.

Tragic stories of WW2 are recalled as are tales of the early days of cricket in Hampshire. The disaster of the sinking of the Titanic is remembered in a number of monuments and the Cenotaph visited. Also included are tales of hymn writing and the misery of leprosy along with a fountain dedicated to the desire for peace. The parks contain numerous works of art and there are excellent opportunities for the keen photographer any time of year.
