Saturdays - Southampton’s Hidden History 1.30pm

Starting at the front of the Historical Bargate guarded by the two infamous Lions, this interesting 90 minute 0.75km walking tour illustrates the lives of the people and city of Southampton in an informative but light hearted way from the time of the Romans up to that of Henry VIII and beyond, including visits to some of the City’s many vaults.

The City’s important maritime and commercial history is described as is its role in conflicts from the Battle of Agincourt through to the Normandy Landings on D-Day. This includes a visit to the unique American Wall.

Places associated with Jane Austen are visited and the City’s Spa Period described.

The Mayflower and Speedwell departed from Southampton. Therefore important locations associated with the Pilgrim Fathers are also visited.

Wednesdays - Ghastly, Grim & Gory

Ghastly, Grim and Gory is a very popular walk and much enjoyed by young people. It deals with accurate historical events that happened in Southampton which link into British history and is therefore educative but at the same time highly amusing and entertaining. This walk is specifically designed for young people between the ages of 8 and 12 years old and is in the style of the much loved "Horrible Histories". The walk starts at 1.30 by the lions at the Bargate and is limited to a maximum of 12 young people and must be booked in advance. The walk lasts for just over an hour and includes visiting a number of locations, including towers and vaults, in the old town of Southampton linked to murder, executions, misdeeds and mishaps. The content is therefore bloodthirsty, scary and lavatorial but is told in an amusing and inoffensive way. Children must be accompanied by an adult for this walk. Cost: £5 per adult with up to two accompanying children free and £5 for each additional child This walk is also available as a private walk and would be a most suitable activity as part of a birthday celebration. The cost for this would be £40 for up to 12 children supervised by four adults. For health and safety as well as supervisory reasons the maximum number of children per adult is three. Unfortunately the vaults and towers as well as the old town walls present access problems for anyone with mobility issues.
